Overseas rapid wage inflation case (from “Global Lessons: A Page from Modern Japanese Human Resource Management”)

When talent shortages intensify, most organisations respond the same way: they offer higher salaries.

The problem is that everyone else can do the same.

One of the case studies featured in Global Lessons examines a South Asian automotive components manufacturer facing rapid wage inflation for skilled technicians. Rather than competing in an escalating salary race, the organisation took a different approach.

It invested in developing its own talent pipeline, introduced skill-based career progression and rewarded employees for building new capabilities.
The result was more than improved retention. Recruitment became easier, wage growth became more sustainable and the organisation strengthened its long-term workforce capability.

One lesson stands out: organisations create a lasting advantage when they invest in developing talent, rather than simply competing for it.

This is one of the regional case studies featured in Global Lessons: A Page from Modern Japanese Human Resources Management.
