I reconnected with a former senior colleague in Saga recently, someone I worked with during my early HR days in Kyoto.
When I first started my career, I learned a great deal from him. The lessons were not only about HR, but also about professionalism, continuous learning and how to approach work with the right mindset.
Seeing him at 60, still energetic and fully engaged in his work and life, was a reminder that a fulfilling career is not simply about reaching certain milestones, but about maintaining curiosity, purpose and the willingness to keep growing over time.
Looking back, many of the perspectives that continue to guide me today can be traced to conversations and examples set by mentors and senior colleagues like him. Their influence often extends far beyond the advice they give at the time. In many cases, it is the example they set that stays with you the longest.
As I have taken on more opportunities to mentor and develop others myself, I have come to appreciate this even more. The support and guidance we provide today may shape someone’s career in ways we never fully see.
Grateful for the opportunity to reconnect and for the lessons that continue to stay with me.
