Highlights from my book “Global Lessons : A Page from Modern Japanese Human Resources Management” Chapter 2

When managing people across borders, even small cultural differences can lead to major HR challenges. That’s what I explore in Chapter 2 of my book 「グローバル企業のための新日本型人材マネジメントのすすめ」Global Lessons: A Page from Modern Japanese Human Resources Management.

This chapter examines real cases of HR issues faced by Japanese companies’ overseas subsidiaries and how they were addressed. The cases are grouped into three areas: human resource development, personnel costs and labor management. For each, I share what happened, why it happened and what actions proved effective.

Over the past decade, I’ve worked with overseas subsidiaries and regional headquarters of Japanese firms to solve local HR challenges. Spending time on-site with HR teams gave me a close view of situations that would be hard to imagine in Japan—shaped by local culture, management styles and ways of working. Each case in this chapter looks at these realities and offers practical ways to align local needs with global strategy.
