World Mental Health Day

Over the years, I’ve learned that my mental wellbeing is closely tied to the way I look after other parts of my life. Running a 42 km marathon showed me the value of steady preparation and consistency. Pushing myself physically taught me that you often don’t know what you’re capable of until you try, and that optimism and persistence can unlock resilience in ways we don’t anticipate. The discipline required to train and push through tough days has carried over into how I approach challenges in both my personal and professional life.

Spending time with my family is another way I stay grounded. Simply being present with them, sharing everyday moments and connecting in small ways helps me recharge and brings clarity to my day.

On World Mental Health Day, it’s worth remembering that while organisations can and should provide support, we each have personal ways of looking after our own wellbeing. For me, staying active and prioritising family time are what keep me steady. For others, it may look very different. What matters is finding the practices that allow you to feel refreshed and able to engage fully with life.

Mental health isn’t just something to reflect on once a year, it’s shaped by the choices we make every day, by taking on challenges, discovering what we’re capable of and adapting along the way.

Last week, I joined the Sapporo Marathon and ran 21 km. It was a meaningful experience that reinforced why I value the habits and moments that keep me balanced.
