AI is rapidly reshaping the early stages of careers. As this Forbes article shows, many of the traditional entry-level roles are being automated or absorbed, leaving fewer openings for new graduates.
That creates a challenge for both sides. Companies risk weakening their future pipelines if they don’t find ways to develop new talent. At the same time, graduates are entering the workforce at a moment when the first step on the ladder is less clear.
From an HR perspective, two things stand out to me:
– Companies need to think differently about early talent. If the entry-level role is disappearing, then we must deliberately create new pathways that develop judgment, business understanding and collaboration skills.
– Young professionals need to build AI literacy while strengthening distinctly human capabilities—adaptability and critical thinking.
The career ladder may not look like it once did, but new routes are emerging. The question is how well organizations and individuals can adapt to meet this transition.
