I joined the Japan Overseas Enterprises Association seminar on Understanding Global Talent Management this week.

The participants came from varied backgrounds—ranging from global HR staff to heads of HR and what stood out was how serious and committed they were in exploring the ideal state of global talent management for their companies. The discussions were practical, focusing on what needs to be done and how to overcome current challenges.

One recurring issue was the power of HR. Some participants noted that HR in their organizations does not have the authority or influence to drive important discussions and initiatives. As a result, HR leaders often face difficulties in pushing forward what is needed.

My key takeaway is that this is not a challenge HR can resolve on its own. We need CEOs and other C-suite leaders to be part of these conversations, and HR leaders must also have the ability to involve top management.

Building effective global talent management requires business leadership and HR leadership working together, side by side.

Thank you to all who participated with such openness and dedication.
