A recent Reeracoen Group ×Rakuten Insight Global Study looked at the career priorities of employees across Asia-Pacific.
Here are a few highlights that stood out to me:
– Skill development has become the #2 career motivator, just behind pay.
– 72% want hybrid work, though fewer than half experience it today.
– CSR is now a deciding factor in job choice for 71% of workers.
– One in three is open to cross-border opportunities.
Japan tells a different story:
– Just 26% are open to relocation (vs 48% avg)
– 87% expect less than a 10% salary increase: the most conservative outlook in the region.
This reflects deep-rooted cultural preferences for stability, modest expectations and incremental career growth. While hybrid work and upskilling are slowly gaining traction, Japan’s workforce shows a stronger tilt toward tradition than mobility.
For employers, this means strategies cannot be one-size-fits-all. Regional trends set the tone, but local context shapes what truly resonates with talent.
