CHRO role is changing

The CHRO role is changing faster than any other C-Suite role and the recent Deloitte report makes it clear.

Expectations that were once centered on compliance and workforce policies have expanded into strategy, digital transformation, and growth leadership. Over the past five years, the skill set for CHROs has grown more than any other executive role. And this expansion isn’t slowing.

In my opinion, the challenge is not simply managing more responsibilities, but knowing where to focus. The breadth of expectations can easily stretch the role too thin. The CHRO’s impact comes from approaching the position with a clear strategic lens, anchoring decisions to business priorities while still protecting people’s agenda.

The report lays out three priorities that resonate strongly with me:
🔹 Move from defense to offense: embedding workforce thinking into strategic decision-making
🔹Build analytical and regulatory strength to anticipate and shape change
🔹Align talent, culture and innovation directly to long-term business objectives

If CHROs can meet these priorities with clarity and discipline, the role can evolve from supporting transformation to leading it, ensuring performance and people stay at the centre of business growth.
