Progress of Human Development

The latest Human Development Report from the UNDP puts it plainly: progress is slowing.

Gaps between high and low HDI countries are widening again—after decades of narrowing. And despite the excitement around AI, many nations are facing a “triple squeeze”: limited financing, fewer opportunities in manufacturing and rising automation.

But the core message of the report isn’t about the tech itself. It’s about people’s choices and how we shape new development pathways in a world flush with AI.

I agree with the report’s emphasis. The traditional gap between countries—based on education levels, market sophistication, or job quality is shrinking.

Until recently, higher income or better education access guided many decisions. But now, the playing field looks more level.

So the question becomes:
How do we differentiate?
What matters most in a world where so much is becoming similar?
If the fundamentals are becoming more equal, what drives people to choose where to live, work, or build a business?

This is where AI might actually help—not by replacing jobs or automating every decision, but by visualizing the complexity of our choices. Helping us imagine new combinations of life and work that weren’t obvious before.

The report lays out a path forward:

🔹Build complementarity between humans and machines
🔹Drive innovation with intent, centered on human needs
🔹Invest in capabilities that count, like education and healthcare

If we treat AI as a partner in human development—not a substitute for it—we have a better shot at building societies where people can thrive on their own terms.
