How is globalisation changing the role of Japanese companies and their HR functions?
At my recent seminar for Japan Overseas Enterprises Association (JOEA), we explored this question through three perspectives: the globalisation of national talent in overseas subsidiaries, the globalisation of Japanese talent and the globalisation of HR itself.
The participants brought great enthusiasm to the session, with many questions and active discussions around the challenges companies face as their international operations evolve.
Globalisation is becoming an increasingly pressing issue for Japanese companies. Overseas subsidiaries are now expected to contribute not only to sales growth but also to profitability, in some cases facing greater pressure to deliver results than their domestic operations.
Meeting these expectations requires a broader approach to global HR management. Companies need to develop national talent who can lead overseas businesses, prepare Japanese professionals to work effectively across borders and build HR systems that support global business objectives while reflecting local realities.
Thank you to JOEA and all the participants for their engagement and thoughtful questions. The discussions reinforced how important these issues have become for Japanese companies operating internationally.
