Minami Family HR System: Year-End Edition

We recently completed our annual review under the Minami Family HR System.

As a result, all family members will remain at the same grade this year, with a small annual increase and a bonus as well. The bonus will be paid as ‘Otoshidama’, the traditional Japanese New Year’s gift.

Looking at the results, one pattern was easy to see.

Across the three targets we set each year: intellect, morality and physical fitness, the outcomes were very different. There was little effort and limited progress on the intellect target, while the physical fitness target showed the opposite: small but consistent effort led to a surprisingly strong result.

It was a simple but important lesson. Results tend to follow where attention and effort actually go, not where intentions are written.

Now, the next step begins. Each child is reflecting on this year and thinking about goals for the year ahead. The hope is not perfection, but continued awareness and steady effort as we move into 2026.

This year reinforced a familiar truth: progress comes from doing the work, even when the steps are small.
